PUZZLE ME RED is a clown and mask
piece created and performed by Michael
Kennard with John Turner
directing. PUZZLE ME RED is a day
in the life of Biv Rogy (an everyman) and his struggle to stay
truthful in a world filled with imbalance, strife and injustice.
Biv is haunted by these inequities through the visual imagery
he sees everyday in the media. Biv Rogy is a clown character
created by Michael Kennard, specifically for this project, using
the Pochinko Technique.
For the past twenty years Michael Kennard and John
Turner have created, performed and produced, to international
acclaim, the clown duo Mump & Smoot.
Together they have created eight full-length clowns shows, and
have been awarded one Dora Mavor Moore Award (best production),
two Canadian Comedy Awards (best new comedy and best performances),
one L.A. Dramalogue award (best performers, visiting artists),
and one Boston Theatre award (outstanding production).
Richard Pochinko was a notable Canadian clown trainer
who developed his own style of performance and training, drawing
on traditions from European and Native North American clowning,
after studying with L'École Jacques Lecoq and L'École
Philipe Gaulier in Paris. Michael Kennard and John Turner are
among Pochinko's most notable students and also teach the Pochinko
Technique. This spring/summer Kennard will teach
Intro To Clown Weekend Workshop and Turner will teach
The Manitoulin Island Clown Intensives.
Michael Kennard is
a graduate of the University Of Guelph Drama program and has
studied physical comedy, clown, mask, improv and movement with
Richard Pochinko, Ian Wallace, Fiona Griffths, Philippe Gaulier
and The Second City, where he has also directed. He has taught
at The Yale School of Drama, Tel Aviv University, California
State University, Guelph University, Bishops University, Equity
Showcase, The SPACE, The Humber College Comedy program and currently,
at the University of Alberta.
John Turner's directing
credits include Karen Hines' Citizen
Pochsy (nominated for the Governor General's Award for
Drama), one of the acclaimed trilogy of Pochsy
Plays on which John has collaborated for over a decade;
Tomson Highway's A Trickster Tale for
De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group; Miriam Cusson and Mélissa
Rockburn's Stuff, Diana Kolpak's
