AMAKHOSi - The Kings of Africa
brings the vibrant culture of South Africa to the Big Top in
an extravagant show that incorporates infectious music and pounding
rhythms, gravity-defying acrobatics and deft choreography, and
elaborate sets and costumes!
The ancient and diverse African culture is a rich
source of inspiration for AMAKHOSi
which features an international cast of 40 and combines time-honoured
traditions with modern life to create a vividly imagined, wildly
energetic and exhilarating spectacle.
AMAKHOSi - The Kings of Africa
tells the story of a cruel witch queen who ruled a mighty mountain.
She had a daughter Nsephe who, while looking into water, fell
in love with the reflection of the handsome Prince Ziko. The
princess enlisted the help of two warrior brothers to search
for Ziko which enraged the witch queen. Once the brothers embarked
on their journey, the evil queen caged her daughter at the top
of the mountain. The warrior brothers found Ziko, and they all
returned to rescue Nsephe from the mountaintop. A great battle
between the Princess' and the witch queen's army ensued, causing
the mountain to go flat. Prince Ziko trapped the witch queen
in a cave inside the mountain, and he and Nsephe ruled as king
and queen of mountain Amakhosi!
AMAKHOSi is
"Poetry of the human body, sinewy magic and captivating
stagecraft" The Independent (SA); and "Full
of athleticism and precision, an illuminating brilliance"
The Citizen (SA).
The Canadian premiere of AMAKHOSi
and launch of a cross-country tour will kick-off in the capital
on June 12 in Lansdowne Park. After raising the Big Top in Ottawa,
AMAKHOSi will tour to Montreal,
QC, Kitchener, ON, Toronto, ON and finish out the year in Vancouver,
